Social Networks as efficient tools for Dating Online! Are they becoming Dating Sites?04:04:43 by Julia Dorofeeva Categories: Dating Articles
Not long ago FoxNews published an article about a strong tendency of MySpace and Facebook to use Online Dating tools to provide services for their users. Single people at Social Networks, do use them as Dating Sites, join groups, chat, go to dates. Dating expert and author Lisa Altalida remains on the fence about using social networking sites as dating tools. "That can be good because you can get a deeper sense of a person on a social networking profile than you can on a dating profile," Altalida said. "Social networking sites are usually used fairly frequently by their users, so you get a truer picture of who the people on the site are, but there is a negative side too" The negatives are of course insecurity and false expectations. Another user feedback says: "As far as Facebook and MySpace go, I like to use them to get to know someone better, but I don't think I'd ever just message anyone out of the blue. Dating sites are different because that's what they're for. But it still feels a little weird on Facebook." Meanwhile, today DirectNews.co.uk posted an article "Social networks 'a highly popular tool'". It's interesting that according to experts, Social Networking is more appealing to older audience as "some social platforms offer the opportunity to regain contact with former friends". However, it states there is no major phenomenon of individuals meeting through the internet and then becoming friends, arguing such socializing is mostly among people who already know one-another. Despite his comments, a recent survey suggested an increasing number of people are turning to the web in order to meet people. The online dating website MakeFriendsOnline questioned 25,000 of its members and found almost a fifth of them felt unable to meet people in more traditional ways. Does it mean that very soon we'll see Social Networking and Dating industries join to satisfy the needs of their members? I think they will and then online users will enjoy more communication and dating on Social Networking Sites... Though I would be a bit disappointing as Social Networks are so varied so they cannot just merge into Dating Sites. I guess it'll a new mixture. What do you think? |

I think that social networking sites are fine for people that want to try to contact random people for free. But, a traditional dating site has people on it actually looking to meet someone. Most people using the dating tools on social networking sites seem to be doing it out of curiosity. If people pay for a membership, you know they are serious about finding someone!

In the past I have used social networking sites to contact friends - old boyfriends - or friends that eventually became boyfriends. However, these were all people that I had previously known and were also friends of friends. So it wasn't some random individual. Also, I did not intend on looking for "love". I think that if you are using these websites intending on looking for "love" you should really use a dating website that has some sort of screening process.

Hey Jenny your totally right! I mean Myspace and Facebook your not looking for MR. or MRS. RIGHT. Just keepin in touch with new and old friends. So if you are seeking someone to date you really should be using a website like match.com or great expectations. My good friend had wonderful things to say about great expectations.

MySpace and Facebook are just using the current popularity of dating sites and try to associate them selfs, in every manner possible, even formatively, with the trend.

Thanks for the very interesting article on dating and online hook ups. It was fascinating. I now plan to use a social networking site to find my next partner.
I will always read this blog.
