In Part I we have started a report on our experience at IDate 2009 this summer in Los Angeles! Let's continue...
First time in a history of a conference there was "Buyers and Sellers Gathering" which was aimed to make people who want to buy a business meet with sellers (or potential sellers). This time there were running site owners selling their sites. It was very good experience.
Hope in future there will be a similar session for software vendors so that we could meet with more people who want to start their Dating or Social Networking business. And for the buyers it’ll be a great opportunity to get all the data on the main players in the industry in one place faster. Though, this time many professionals were very interested in our technology and we managed o run several software presentations.
Another intense session was devoted to payments and payment processors: per cent they take from dating and social networking site owners, regulations they have and what to look for when choosing a payment provider. Man Payment providers were in a room, and they discussed the topic after the presentation. It turned out that the usual Dating site might get 4-7% charge from every transaction. Casual sites get 7-10% usually. The per cent depends on services payment system offers (support, charge backs procession etc).
Alex Mehr from Zoosk talked about dating and social networking systems combination. Mixed sites are popular and can be highly profitable. He also mentioned different ways of filling in the database with active users (Big Social Networks APIs, Invite Friends and contact importing options for site users).
Brian Balfour from Viximo talked about virtual goods and the trends in the sphere. He stated 2 new trends both for Dating and Social Networking: Social Currency and Virtual shops. Obviously, it’s a huge market with great monetizing opportunities. When members use virtual currency at a site, they forget that they spend real money. As a result, they make impulsive orders; get expensive virtual stuff they wouldn’t buy with real money. Also, you can partner with big corporations for branding virtual goods you give to your users.
Final Panel debate covered everything that was discussed at the conference: trends, ways of monetizing, opportunities in the industry, techniques to keep up with the industry growth and much more. Everybody was very excited including us as we have managed to meet our clients, CEOs of big companies in the industry, affiliates, partners and make new partnerships!
