This is a rather peculiar condition in which the senses get cross-wired. For example, a person with synethesia may see colours when they hear a sound, or can actually taste words; stimulation of one sense, it seems, causes an inappropriate stimulation of another.

The most common form of synesthesia is when people see or hear words in colour. The condition affects about 1 in 25 000 people and is found more commonly in women than men. There appears to be more left handed individuals among synesthetics than in the general population although the significance of this is unclear. Often synesthetics have exceptional memories, have a tendency to have unusual 'psychic' experiences, but have problems at maths or navigation.

It's not a burden for such people, I should note. They even have their own conference called American Synesthesia Association meetings. They're also declaring fierce pride in their unusual sensory traits: "Synesthetics say they wouldn't give it up for the world. They think their life is enriched by it," says Lynn C. Robertson, a leading authority of synesthesia and other unusual neurological conditions at University of California at Berkeley's psychology department.

In real life we can meet a lot of such people. They do not speak about their ability but they do enjoy it. Due to them and to the fact that all people have these ability (hidden) we have metaphors and such phenonenon as talent and creativity.

The only synesthetes who ever complain about synesthesia are those who hear (annoying) sounds when they see things like bright colors. However, this is very, very, very rare as scientists say. One Australian synesthetic complains of hearing a high-pitched, headache- inducing sound when he sees a dark red curtain, says Anina Rich, a graduate student at the University of Melbourne. She led the Australian team, whose synesthesia research appears in today's Nature.

There's a simple test to know if you're a synesthetic. Look at the test image (see above) chart points out easily whether a synesthetic person will be able to see numbers in color. If you are able to see a triangle in red twos, then you have it. And if in addition you are a Dating Site owner or planning to become one, then you'll easily inderstand what your Dating Site users need, though the feelings and colors they see are not the same, approximately you can guess.
