Bumble agrees to a $1.3 billion buyout by Ithaca Holdings
Bumble will leave the stock market and become a private company. The buyer valued Bumble much higher than the market did: Ithaca Holdings pays $6.05 per share in cash, a 138% premium to the share price before the news. The deal is worth about $1.3 billion. Ithaca’s co-CEOs Ravi Gupta and John Hegeman will run Bumble, and founder Whitney Wolfe Herd stays involved. A private company does not publish results every quarter, so expect fewer public numbers and bigger product bets. Somewhere, a shareholder who sold Bumble last week is very quiet today.

Character.AI files for bankruptcy, and Disney bids $20 million for a licence
Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in a Delaware court on 12 October. For owners, the message is clear: a famous AI companion can still run out of money, so the cost of each conversation matters. Disney offered $20 million for a non-exclusive licence to part of the company’s technology, and other buyers can bid more. The court filing lists assets and debts between $50 million and $100 million.

How many Indian singles check dating messages with AI first?
51.2% of 8,240 urban singles in India run their messages through AI before sending them, says the 2026 report by dating app Aisle. For a dating site, this means many first messages are already edited by AI. 46% have used AI to write or improve their profile. But 51.9% of women ignore opening messages that sound written by AI.

US Senate report finds gaps in Tinder’s fight against romance scams
A US Senate report released on 13 October says Tinder and Hinge were slow to stop romance scammers. The main point for owners: lawmakers now look at how fast you catch fraud, not only at your rules. About 1.5 million bad actors matched with at least one user on Tinder or Hinge in the first three quarters of 2025, and almost 500,000 of them exchanged contact details. After Tinder added a video selfie check, contacts with scam, spam and bot accounts fell by more than 70%. Match Group says the report understates its investment.

AI companion Tolan raises $30 million a week after Character.AI’s bankruptcy
Tolan, an AI companion app, raised $30 million from investors including Union Square Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Homebrew. Investors still pay for AI companions, but for those that already earn money: Tolan reports about 250,000 monthly users and annual revenue in the tens of millions of dollars. Its total funding is now about $60 million. The money will turn the companion into a daily helper, not only a chat partner. One AI companion goes to court, another goes to the bank, seven days apart.

Tinder and Sprite put a dating show on a soda can in India
Tinder and Sprite launched a limited co-branded can for Truth and Spice, a celebrity dating series on Instagram and YouTube, announced on 15 October. A big dating brand now finds users through food and drink, not only through app ads. In two episodes, celebrity pairs answer truth questions and take spicy food challenges. Tinder now fits in a fridge, between the milk and the leftovers.
Do this week: list three local cafes or bars your users already visit, and ask one of them about a joint singles night.

How many users does a student dating app need to ask for $250,000?
The College Date in Nigeria has 1,010 registered users and is now raising a $250,000 pre-seed round. A small user base is enough to start talking to investors if some users already pay. The app connects students on their own campus and was started by students in Nigeria. Some users already pay for features, although the founder says retention is still low. The money will go to growth on campuses, product work, and trust and safety. The next step is more Nigerian universities, then the wider African market. 1,010 users is not a unicorn. It is a very confident pony. If you want to compare costs before you raise, see Dating Pro pricing.
We rewrote our guide: build a dating app, then run it
Our guide on building a dating app now has two parts: how to build it, and how to run it after launch. The main point: AI coding tools make the build faster, but payments, moderation, support and updates still need an owner every day. Think of a coffee machine at home. Buying one is easy; making coffee for every customer every morning is the real work. Part 2 covers costs with sources, timelines, and how to use AI coding agents on top of a working base instead of an empty folder.
